There’s a certain closing of the circle here, since Gertrude Stein said of her version of Oakland (her memories, her haunts, her nostalgia) that there is no there there. I love that Tommy used this as the title to this extraordinary work and then drew characters from an imaginary Oakland. It’s an Oakland that doesn’t exist. Or maybe existed once in some shape or form, but doesn’t exist now. The “there there” works on so many levels.
